Repeat that!
A downloadable game for Windows and Linux
How to play
Each day you get a procedurally generated dungeon which you have to clear of all enemies.
Killing enemies rewards you with money and "essence".
Essence helps you start at an earlier date (100 per day).
The story
High school hasn't been the same since the hero got that retro game.
What a surprise to find themselves inside the game itself! Fighting the very monsters depicted on the cover art.
After all the time in blissful ignorance, thinking it was only a fun magical experience, a weird thing comes out of the screen: The only creature not yet seen inside the game from the cover art, a companion meant to guide whoever got their hands in this game.
If only that was the only surprise... The new companion describes a cataclysmic event from a secret boss in the game: A which will have enough power to escape the game and wreak havoc in the real world.
She must be stopped before that day arrives
The theme and inspiration
I interpreted the GMTK game jam theme, "count down", as the number of days left for an event to happen, with the main thing in mind on how the Persona series follows the day-to-day life of the protagonists, who have to fight their way inside some weird world.
In this game, the story starts basically at the end of the game, with the boss fight just a few days away.
The idea is to have basically no way of succeeding, with the intention of the player having to make "the companion" stronger, which will allow them to contact "the hero" at an earlier date, and have more time to properly prepare them for what's to come.
The next steps
What needs to be implemented (hopefully before the jam ends)
- Basically all the features of an RPG: stats, levels, equipment, items, skills, etc.
(In the jam I focused on the concept of generating random levels per day and having a big fight on a date). - Upgrades (to stats, to damage, to amount of collected resources, etc.)
- Menus.
- More enemies.
- Improve controls.
